International Travel: Secure your aisle seat!
International travel can sometimes be a challenge in today’s age of technological excellence. In a bid to get too many things right and to provide too many facilities, air lines sometimes compromise on basic requirements, not really intending to do so. The biggest complaint with airlines is the lack of space between seats. Most people don’t mind giving away a few of those toffees and a snack if the could gain some more leg room space. Adjusting to the two and a half feet space between the seats of the economy class of most of the airlines is a tough task. Just imagine having to be stuck in one position on an eighteen hour flight!! This is even worse when you think about your neighbor’s elbow nudging into your tummy. Both of you are in a miserable state unable to figure out what to do to ease the situation. You usually try and adjust with a smile but sometimes, there is tension when the other person fails to understand that both have paid for their respective seats. Sometimes when there is an assumption from the other side that they should get more elbow space, you need to give it back in the language they understand. Just in case something goes wrong, you do have medical insurance don’t you. It would have been a lot more easier if the airplane architect had thought about this and spared some more room. Look at the kind of fights you are privy to thanks to the farsightedness of some engineer who thought he was intelligent! Talking about space, most usually prefer the aisle seat. This gives the advantage over the middle seat or the window seat; these usually give a crammed experience. It somehow gives one a claustrophobic feeling and many try to avoid it all the time but you are not spared on the aisle seat either. The stewardesses pushing the food and drinks trolley often wakes you up with a patient “excuse me” to tell you your shoulder or leg is blocking the way for the food and drinks trolley. And there goes your sleep. Since they have been kind, you can barely show your frustration. They are doing their duty after all! Once in a while the aisle seat becomes a disaster when the stewardess drops a cup or a spoon or some drink on your dress. And yet again the patient “I am so sorry” makes you feel the middle seats are the best. Another valuable international travel lesson is to be careful of the baggage compartment on top. It is easy to bang your head on an open door above. And once you bang your head, the funny and frustrating part is when you hear that stewardess behind you saying “ohhhh….did you hurt yourself? Are you alright?” Naturally, you’re having a blast and expecting more of the same on a long flight as you travel abroad. Whichever seat you get on the airplane, you simply wish you had some more space. But if you are still aiming for the aisle, be warned that nobody likes the middle seat. So book early and secure that place. Unless you want to wait for the aisle on the next flight.
